Hone Tuwhare, one of the first Maori poets to be published in English, died on Jan. 16. Cause of death was not released. He was 86. Tuwhare's work spanned more than 40 years, and earned him two Montana New Zealand Book Awards for poetry. He was also named New Zealand's second Te Mata Poet Laureate in 1999.
